At 10 Monday morning, a siren sounded for two minutes, and the country came to a standstill to remember the six million who were murdered by the Nazis and their collaborators.
At Yad Vashem and the Knesset in Jerusalem, the names of those murdered were being read out. Those taking part in reciting the names included President Shimon Peres, Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu and Knesset Speaker reuven Rivlin. They each told of the final moments of their own relatives murdered by the Nazis.
In addition to the many ceremonies in Israel, the March of the Living is scheduled for Monday afternoon in Poland from Auschwitz to Birkenau, with the participation of representatives from Israel, Holocaust survivors and youth delegations from around the world.
This march is also marking the 50th anniversary of the Eichmann trial.
Here in Israel, commemorations will conclude Monday evening with ceremonies at two kibbutzim set up by Holocaust survivors: Lohamei Ha'Getaot and Yad Mordechai.

A ceremony was also being held at the Massuah museum in Tel Yitzhak.
Speaking at the Yad Vashem ceremony President Shimon Peres that it is Israel's legacy to physically defend Jewish lives. He said the Nazi Holocaust proved beyond question that a Jewish state with a Jewish army was necessary.
Singling out Iran, Peres said that the existence of a regime whose leaders are Holocaust deniers should cause every conscience to feel revulsion. He said the Iranian leadership poses a danger to the entire world, not only to Israel.
Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu spoke of the three main lessons Israel must learn in the wake of the Holocuast. He spoke of the danger of ignoring the threats of those wishing to "annihilate us," and said Israelis must not bury their heads in the sand. He said the second lesson stems from the fact that attacks on the Jewish people were always preceded by waves of hatred that prepared the ground for those attacks. He said today there are people who charge the the Jewish state with responsibility for all of the world's ills. The third lesson, Netanyahu said, is the need for the Jewish people to take its defense in its own hands. "We cannot hand over our fate to the hands of others," Netanyahu said.
The theme of this year's remembrance day is "Fragments of Memory: The Face behind the documents, Artifacts and Photographs." Six torches in memory of the six million Jews murdered during the Holocaust were lit by survivors whose wartime experiences reflect the central theme.
On Monday at 10 am, a two minute siren will be sounded, bringing traffic to a standstill. It will be followed by the wreath-laying ceremony at the Warsaw Ghetto uprising memorial at Yad Vashem in Jerusalem.
In Poland, thousands of youth, accompanied by Holocaust survivors, second generation members and dignitaries will participate in the 23rd annual March of the Living from the Auschwitz to Birkenau camps. This year's march is marking the 50th anniversary of the trial of Nazi war criminal Adolph Eichmann.
Holocaust Remembrance Day commemorations will conclude in Israel with a ceremony at Kibbutz Lohamei HaGettaot. | 01.05.11 - 21:27 | Print

In 2010, 614 violent occurences against Jews were recorded, involving violence against civilians, damage to private property and vandalism targeted against synagogues, cemeteries and memorials. In contrast, a record high number of 1129 anti-Semitic incidents were registered in 2009, and attributed to responses to Israel's military campaign in the Gaza Strip that was launched at the end of 2008.
Britain, France and Canada were in 2010 the three countries with highest rates of anti-semitic incidents, mostly physical street assaults on people identified as Jews. They constituted near 60 percent of all incidents worldwide.

Speaking to a Kol Yisrael reporter, Finance Minister Steinitz said the Palestinians will have to choose between a joint coffer with a terrorist organization and continued cooperation with Israel and the rest of the world.
Steinitz said that if Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas is choosing to embrace Hamas, he must prove that the finances that Israel is transferring to the Authority is not going to reach a terror organization and will not be used for the purchase of rockets that are then fired at Israel.
